Great Start To The New Year!

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2019

Started off the New Year pretty cool.  Low to mid 30s yesterday and again today.  Gong to see a warm up starting tomorrow with mid 40s, then mid 50s Friday and 60s (wow!) Saturday and Sunday.  60s again Monday but chances of showers, probably early.  Otherwise, all next week looks great with temperatures pretty much in the 50s the rest of the week.

Today is the first day we have seen generation all day.  Although they had projected generators shutting down at 10:00 a.m. today, it is still running a low two at 4:00 p.m.  Tomorrow is showing a lot of water all day.  Haven’t seen this for a while.  Table Rock Lake is now at 915.0 feet (normal power pool for this time of the year).  We’ll just have to see what they do after tomorrow.  Hope we can get back to the low or no generation, especially with this great weather in the forecast!

Jim on the water last Wednesday with Hugh from Florida.  He is a Tarpon guide out there.  They had a good day on the JQ streamer, ruby midge and the hot hare’s ear nymph.  Nasty day, but they prevailed.

Ty – 12/27/18

Thursday, Carolyn took Troy, and his two sons, Ty and Trey.  Troy took our fly fishing school a few years ago and has also fished with us in the past.  Decided it was time to get his boys on the water with us.  Fun day!  Think this was Ty’s second time to have a fly rod in his hands.  Trey probably didn’t have much more times than that and everyone, including Dad, did great!  It was a black copperhead midge day.  They also hooked a few stripping the tiger tail on a 3 ips sinking leader.   Jim had a group of guys who wanted lots of instruction and possibly catch a few fish.  Jim got the instruction out of the way and then they started having fun catching fish on the black copperhead midge and the regular zebra midge.  Fun day for these guys too!

Darren took Steve, from Kansas, out for half a day Friday.  Steve is fairly new and wanted to experience fly fishing from a drift boat.  They did both….fished from the boat and got out and did some wading.  Their best fly was also the black copperhead midge.

New Year’s eve day, Larry and Doug spent half a day on the water with Darren.  Tough day for them, but they landed some fish on the black copperhead midge with a scud dropper.

New Years Day it was the annual River Runners Women’s Fly Fishing group on the river.  Fun day even though it was only in the 30s and overcast most of the day.  But we hit the water a little after 10:00 a.m. and decided we could no longer feel our fingers around 3:00 p.m.  What a way to start the New Year!

MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Saturday, December 22nd, 2018

From all of us here at River Run Outfitters, we wish you and yours a MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY and SAFE NEW YEAR!  Hope your new year is filled with many perfect days on the water.

Beautiful day today.  Temperature should reach upper 50s and there’s lots of sunshine.  More 50s through Christmas day, but the forecast looks like rain moving in for Christmas day and the day after and probably through Thursday.  Good news Thursday is the temperature will be in the upper 50s.  The weekend dries up, but the temperatures take a nose dive into the low 40s all the way through the New Year.  Right now we are looking at about a 50% chance of rain New Years eve day.  Cross your fingers, there’s fishers who want to be on the water both New Years eve day and New Years Day.

Through Christmas day, we will see a low one unit going non-stop from now until then.  Should be some good fishing!

Awesome Day!

Monday, December 17th, 2018

What a beautiful Sunday we just had.  Lots of sunshine.  No wind!  And, temperatures in the upper 50s.  Looks like we are going to have a few more of these awesome days in December!  Today, through Wednesday look great.  Sunshine (when this fog lifts), today and tomorrow for sure.  By Wednesday we will probably see some clouds moving in as they are forecasting rain late Wednesday into Thursday.  Temperatures will continue to be in the upper 50s.  By Thursday, it looks like mid 40s and rain.  But, Friday moves into upper 40s, sun peeking in and by Saturday it’s back to mid 50s and sunshine.   Better get out and enjoy this nice weather.  It is December!

Generation for the past four days has basically been a lot one unit.  They might be using two units, but if you listen to the actual flow and level, it works out to the equivalent of one unit.  Today, they are bumping up some generation this morning, but should shut it back to the equivalent of one unit by mid morning which is supposed to be the schedule for the balance of the day.  Probably see more of the same tomorrow.

Fun day on the water yesterday for Carolyn.  She took Henry and his father, Matt out for half a day.  This was Henry’s first time with a fly rod and it will be great to be around to see what a

good fisher he is by the time he’s 20.  He did a great job getting his fly into the water, setting the hook and bringing in those fish.  He said he was going to name the first trout he caught Henry, Jr.

Matt – 12/16/18

Low one unit running, so we drifted the banks from just below the fish ladder all the way down past Trophy Run.  Good day for Matt and Henry on the apricot egg pattern.   Dennis, from Kansas spent the morning with Darren.  He

Henry’s best fish of the day – 12/16/18

had a fun day fishing a cool looking emerger pattern which Darren has dubbed “a modified Duracell”.  Sounds like they exchanged a lot of stories in the boat.  They stayed mainly in the area around the fish ladder.

Better get out and enjoy this weather while you can.  Not too many shopping days left until Christmas!!!

Picked The Best Day Of The Week!

Thursday, December 6th, 2018

Today has been rainy and in the low 40s all day.  Tomorrow’s nigh looks like upper 30s and overcast all day.  Right now Saturday is still showing some kind of moisture….rain, sleet, snow…all of the above for Saturday.  Next week is definitely looking better all week than this week did.

Two to three generators for two to three hours in the morning the past few days.  Then no generation until late in the afternoon and that has been just for a little while.  Otherwise, no generation most of the day.

John – 12/5/18

Picked the best day of this week for Carolyn to take Beth and John out for half a day.  Beth is just getting started (took up the sport about a year ago) and handles a rod really well.  They had a good day on the water Wednesday catching early in the day on the black copperhead midge.  This worked best during the water drop.  They had run three units for a couple hours, back down to two then off by 9:00 a.m.  Once the water dropped out completely, no midges, but apricot egg pattern took over.  Day certainly turned out nice with temperatures in the upper 40s and the sun shining most of the time.  The fish were pretty happy too!

Not Ready for Winter!!!

Tuesday, December 4th, 2018

Pretty cool the past two days.  Temperatures in the 30s  Burrrrr!  Should hit upper 40s tomorrow, but after that it’s downhill.  Even forecasting snow on Saturday and it could be a few inches!  Good news is that next week looks like some 40s come back into the forecast, but also chances for showers.

Generation was off for the weekend.  They fired up a unit yesterday morning and this morning, they are running the equivalent of two units for an hour, then three for a couple hours, back to two and then off until 5:00 p.m. when they will fire up two units for a couple hours.  We’ll just have to see what tomorrow brings.

Carolyn on the water last Thursday with Kathy from Louisiana.  Tough day!  This gal catches fish when no one else does and that is what she was doing Thursday.  But!  Fish were far and few between.  She worked hard for the fish she brought in.  Nothing was really working consistently.

Saturday, Carolyn took Keven and his son-in-law Jedd out for half a day.  This was the day we were having the 30-40 mph wind gusts.  Indicator fishing was tough as the waves were high enough you couldn’t keep them in sight all the time.  What to do?  Pull some streamers.  Put on a 1.5 ips sinking leader and the JQ streamer and they had at least two doubles.  Wasn’t a great day, but considering the wonderful weather, it certainly wasn’t a bad day.

Good Fishing !

Thursday, November 29th, 2018

Looks like to day will be a great day to be on the water.  Temperature should get into the upper 50s.  Right now the sun is shining, but we might see a bit of cloud cover later in the day.  Friday is not looking too bad either.  Temperatures in the upper 50s and cloudy.  Probably see some heavy rain Friday night, but will recover with low 60s and sunshine Saturday.  Even Sunday and mid 50s looks good.  Next week will be cooler (40s) most of the week.

One generator for one hour this morning.  Then, no generation the rest of the day.  Maybe we’re back to that pattern.  Either way, one unit or no units, gives us good fishing conditions.

Darren on the water Monday with Jerry and his friend Ken.  Pretty darn cold that day plus 30 mph wind gusts.  Gotta give it to these guys.  They stuck with it and caught some fish on a scud dropper beneath a ruby 2 midge.

Jim – 11/27/18

Tuesday was a little nicer.  The temperature was in the 40s and there was some sunshine.  So, Wednesday Jim and friend Tim spent some time on the water with Gina.   Very good day for these guys on the black copperhead midge or stripping the tiger tail.  Fun day for everyone!

PERFECTION!

Monday, November 26th, 2018

One would not know from the bitter weather we have had the past couple days that just this past Saturday it hit the 70s with lots of sunshine and no wind!  Today it was in the low 20s when I got up and yesterday, everything not nailed down outside is somewhere else!  Couple bitter days and then we will see 50s again.  Unfortunately, there is a 50% chance of rain both Thursday and Friday.  By Saturday, still 50s and much less chances of rain.  Cross our fingers!

Low one unit still the trend.  Over the weekend, it was even lower than the normal low one.  Projection for today is the same, but I noticed on the site that they are running a little higher than a full one.  Maybe needed to bump it to get some power to heat somewhere!  All indications are that the lake is turning.  Dissolved oxygen levels have been much better this year than they have in the past.  Due in part to the fact that we have not had the horrific rainfalls we have experienced over the past several years.   Plus, this year, the generation pattern has certainly been much different than we have seen in the past.  This too, might be a contributing factor to the good oxygen levels we have experienced this Fall.  Whatever someone is doing, let’s hope they keep it up!  Right now, we are seeing levels at and slightly above 9 ppm!!!!

Brenda – 11/24/18

Carolyn was fortunate enough to be on the water Saturday to enjoy that beautiful day with Brandon and his mother Brenda.  It has been a tradition with them since 2007.  They fish with us the day after Thanksgiving.  Looking at the weather this year, we opted to move it one day and was that the right

Brandon – 11/24/18

decision!  Great day and great fishing.  Early in the day is was the ruby 2 under the size 16 red d-ribbed midge.  Later as the sun really got high and warm, the P&P under a lightning bug or the red d-rib.  Lots of fish and lots of fun in the sun!   David and Karen, from Texas, were enjoying a day on the water with Dana.  They were catching on a size 14 P&P or the black copperhead and ruby 2 midges.

Hope Everyone Survived Thanksgiving Dinner!

Friday, November 23rd, 2018

What a beautiful Thanksgiving Day!  There were quite a few fishers who took advantage of the gorgeous day.  However, today is a cool, rainy day today.  Back to reality.  It is November.  We are in for a few more nice days.   Saturday looks like an even better day that yesterday.  Highs in the 60s….upper! and lots of sunshine.  Sunday is not bad, highs in the mid 50 and sunshine early.  Looks like the afternoon might cloud up.  Monday and Tuesday are sunny and temperatures mid 40s Monday and low 50s Tuesday.  Rain chances show up again by Thursday.

Still running a low one unit all day.

Jim out with Bob and Mike this past Monday.  They had a good day on the JQ streamer and the hot hare’s ear nymph.

Chet – 11/20/18

Tuesday, Carolyn took Chet and Chris out for half a day.  Chris is fairly new to fly fishing, but

Chris – 11/20/18

after a few fish on his line, it didn’t take him long to pick it up.  Very good day for these guys mainly on the ruby 2 midge.

Darren on the water Wednesday with Rick and his son, William.  They had a good, fun day on the ruby 2 midge.  Darren worked a little with William on line management and William

did the rest by catching fish!  Carolyn had

Jacque – 11/21/18

Jacque and his son-in-law, Jason on the water.  They had a really good day on the ruby 2, and later in the day the black copperhead midge under either a red d-rib

Jason – 11/21/18

midge or the lightning bug.  Very little slack time for these guys.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING DAY!

Thursday, November 22nd, 2018

Hope you and yours enjoy a wonderful day today gathered around your Thanksgiving Day turkey dinner!

Also, I hope that either before or after dinner you get a chance to wet a line.  Fishing has been Great!  Low flow and a 60 degree plus day!   Lots of things for which we can be thankful!

Good Days On The Water!

Sunday, November 18th, 2018

Overcast, cold day today, but it will start warming up this week.  Upper 40s Monday and Tuesday,  Partly sunny Monday with full sunshine Tuesday.  Wednesday and Turkey days will be in the upper 50s.  Right now, it looks like upper 40s Friday and chances for rain.  Saturday looks great but Sunday we are seeing chances for rain again and low 50s.

Change in the generation schedule Saturday through Monday.  Low one unit both Saturday and again today.  Mixed bag Monday with low one unit most of the day, but an intermittent 2 units mixed in here and there.  We’ll have to see what surprises they have for us Tuesday!

Dale – 11/16/18

Mike’s 1st on fly rod – 11/16/18

Fun days on the water and great weather.  Mid 60s, lots of sunshine and hungry fish.  Gina on the water Friday with Dale and his friend Mike.  Dale wanted to introduce Mike to fly fishing and it was his annual birthday celebration trip.  Good day for them on the black beadhead and copperhead midges.  A few on the P&P.

Val – 11/16/18

Two ladies from Maryland, Val and Kathy spent the morning on the water with Carolyn.  They fish a lot on the Eastern waters and were thoroughly pleased with our river.  Good day for them on the ruby 2 midge, but

Kathy – 11/16/18

they did the best on the apricot or clown egg patterns.  They are already planning their next trip back here.

Steve – 11/17/18

Steve – 11/17/18

Saturday, Darren took Steve and Forrest out for half a day.  They fished the “Duracell”, ruby 2 and a size 18 scud dropper.

Forrest – 11/17/18

Carolyn had Steve and his friend, Kyle.  Steve is from Oklahoma and

Kyle – 11/17/18

Kyle lives just north of here.  Steve was introducing him to fly fishing.  Short casting lesson for Kyle and a refresher for Steve and the catching was on.  Good day for these guys on a #16 red d-rib midge with the ruby 2 dropper.
